• Organize Outdoor Family Dinner: Make dinnertime with the family a device-free hour, and take advantage of the opportunity to spend time outside. In addition, science shows that eating dinner as a family has mental, physical, and emotional benefits, such as increased self-esteem and a lower risk of obesity and depression. • Set Aside Quiet Hours: Setting aside an hour each day, or at the very least on weekends, for quiet time, which can be spent thinking, drawing, playing outside, or reading, is another way to unplug. A completely silent hour can be difficult for both adults and children. Starting with a quiet 15 minutes and working up in 15-minute increments can be beneficial for younger children. Quiet time can help children distinguish between loneliness and solitude. Adolescents who were given blocks of alone time reported higher alertness and more positive emotional outcomes.
